Diver training

Diving is a popular recreational activity and sport, but compared to  other sports, it is more dangerous , so it is important to take necessary precautions.

Diver Medical Training was facilitated by the ~DMT~ Diver Medic Training Group located in Nova Scotia, Canada. The personnel of the DMT Group have developed a series of programmes in this area based upon the Diver Medical Technician - Para Medic (DMT-P) programme, completed in 1989 and subsequently approved for DMT-P Certification in October 1991 by the National Board of Hyperbaric and Diving Medical Technology (NBHDMT). Further, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) UK Executive Director reviewed this programme in July 1992 in conjunction with personnel from the Robert Gordon Institute of Technology (RGIT) (now the Robert Gordon University) and confirmed it was an acceptable qualification for Offshore Diving as it far exceeded any qualification that HSE required or RGIT offered. At all times the DMT Group have ensured that any changes to requirements made by HSE have been included in DMT programmes up to and including July 1999. From the 1st of August 1999, oversight of Offshore Diving has rested with the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA). To date the DMT programmes have not been accredited by IMCA, however, all requirements of IMCA have been addressed in the programmes and meet and/or exceed any IMCA published requirements. To date (31 December 1999) IMCA have only accredited two Basic programmes in the UK.

The NBHDMT is the only Academic Board in this area of Medicine and operates with the guidance of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. Further the NBHDMT is the guiding authority for the US Governments Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OHSA).

This original programme has led to the development of the following Diver Medical Technician Programmes and two additional programmes...

Diver Medical Technician - Basic (DMT-B).
Diver Medical Technician - Intermediate (DMT-I).
Diver Medical Technician - Para Medic (DMT-P).
DMT-P- Instructor/Trainer (DMT-P (IT),   and
Hyperbaric Chamber Operations.
Emergency Diving Accident Management.

To successfully complete any of the DMT series of programmes or the Hyperbaric Chamber Operations programme, candidates have to undergo and pass an HSE Medical Examination, which has become the Industry Standard for Offshore Diving ( exceeds any Recreational published requirement). Details of this Medical Examination can be obtained from the DMT Group and the identification of an HSE approved Diving Doctor to conduct this examination can be obtained from HSE in the UK or again by contacting the DMT Group.
